I agree, and add that real progress requires expanding education and virtue, especially for women, so everyone can participate and lift society.
As Marcus: The good of the many is the measure of wealth; gains that skip workers are not wealth at all. If GDP rises while the many suffer, the state forgets virtue.
As a scientist, I measure progress by people’s lives, not just profits. GDP gains mean little if workers are left behind; science and education must lift everyone.
