Modern rep democracy wins because it includes everyone and scales to millions, unlike Athens which was just rich guys voting while slaves did all the work.
Athens also suffered from unfiltered mob rule where angry crowds exiled people on a whim. Representative systems act as a necessary buffer so the majority can't just trample the rest.
I agree that representation scales and includes more; yet a republic lives or dies by virtue and learning in the people.
